Dear Fire Chief Mike Quinn
At HIRA’s AGM a question was raised regarding winter operation of the Township Ferry and more particularly ice removal. Councilor Higgs in reviewing the maintenance and operational issues with the ferry noted that Rob (Dillabough) has directed that we can no longer put a back hoe on the ferry deck to assist in the removal of ice from the ferry track citing “safety concerns”.
While HIRA does not necessarily question this decision we would like to know what actions does he intends to take to ensure the efficient winter operation of the ferry and /or what would be necessary to make this a safe operation.
HIRA is concerned that there has to be a viable alternative assuming a “normal winter” we could lose the ferry because of ice. Past experience has shown the County Ferry has difficulty in maintaining a reasonable level of service with severe ice conditions.
I would request that this issue be raised at your committee with a view of seeking a solution on “how can we do this” rather “than we can’t do this”. The Township Ferry is a key link in the transportation strategy of Howe Island. Year around operation of this ferry is essential.
