HIRA BRIEFING NOTE- January 16, 2023

   This is a brief note to HIRA members and other residents of Howe Island about the Township of Frontenac Islands regular council meeting held on Monday, December 12, 2022 and other items of interest. The public was provided with Zoom access to the meeting and a couple of our HIRA directors called into the meeting. Only matters of particular interest to Howe Island residents are highlighted here.

Auditor’s Report re 2021 Financial Statements:

The report was compiled by KPMG, on the 2021 financial statements. The report has been archived on the website for the Township of Frontenac Islands at:

By-Law 2020-29 Repealed:  Access for motorized vehicles no longer restricted on HI Trail:

After repealing the by-law, council instructed Township staff to remove all signage related to the restriction as well as the gates that had been installed to restrict access of motorized vehicles to the trail.

By-Law 2022-27 re Regulation of Parking on Lighthouse Lane:

Township staff is to report back to council on the matter at the February 13, 2023 council meeting.

International Joint Commission and low water levels:

  • Council introduced a motion that the township direct correspondence to the International Joint Commission (IJC) to alert the IJC to the grave concerns shared by Howe Island residents around the extremely low water levels we are experiencing.
  • Township staff was instructed to direct the correspondence to the IJC as soon as possible.

    Darlene Plumley, CAO resigns:

  • Darlene Plumley, the Chief Administrative Officer for the township has resigned to take a position with Lanark County. Her resignation is effective January 3, 2023.
  • Darlene has provided the township with exemplary leadership and support for the last nine years. She will be sorely missed. We wish Darlene well in her new position.
