DEER ON HOWE (DOH) COMMITTEE UPDATE
Following our well-attended meeting on October 16 and the formation of the DOH committee in November, the DOH committee has met with the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) and has had informal discussions with our Council members. Also, we have discussed the deer situation with concerned residents of Wolfe Island as they have met with our Council members.
At the April 14 meeting of the Township of Frontenac Islands, Council agreed to contact MNR to conduct a deer count on both Howe and Wolfe if necessary, to ensure both islands have acceptable levels of deer.
The DOH committee will meet with Monique Charette, Management Biologist, MNR on Thursday, April 23. We will review the results of the 2008 hunting season, the determination of a healthy deer population on Howe, deer ticks and their relationship with lyme disease, vehicle accidents involving deer, increases in coyotes, etc.
With these items in mind, we ask for islanders to submit your comments or advise us of your experiences with deer. Please email, firstname.lastname@example.org,by 5:00pm on April 20.
