The sixth and final meeting was held in the Howe Island Municipal office on May 14. The Mayors from the four Townships, two County employees and the four councillors from Frontenac Islands were in attendance. Warden Janet Gutowski(Central Frontenac) commented that this was the highest attended meeting of the six…eight(8) islanders attended…and contributed to the debate in such a manner that the hour-long meeting went beyond the scheduled hour. Thank you to those who attended.
Overall, the Mayors seemed not to favour the recommendation with Mayor Jim Vanden Hoek stating that in all likelihood, the Mayors wouldn’t agree to the recommendation as outlined by the consultant…I suggest this “composition review” has been presented before and in this case, was dusted off without consulting our Official Plan nor the County’s sustainability plan(ICSP) and was made “local” by interviewing Township representatives.
Many good comments and questions came from Howe Islanders with many questions and comments that would impact all Townships within Frontenac County…will this plan add administrative staff and therefore more cost thus increasing the percentage of our tax dollars going to the County…how would islanders get fair representation at the County level…would another Official Plan from the County be presented to the Townships and then have possible conflict with a/the Township official plan(s)…with a County population of approximately 27,000, why is there a need to grow the level of elected officials and in doing so, create conflict between such elected officials and the Mayors from each Township(would the Mayors be the “bosses of these additional three elected officials). While there were many other comments, I won’t detail them.
Again, while there didn’t seem to be much “traction” on this proposal, keep in mind that this is politics, so who knows what will happen. A decision is to be made this week.
