HIRA'S RESPONSE TO THE OFFICIAL PLAN DRAFT AMENDMENT
Dear HIRA Member, Approximately thirty-five (35) Howe Islanders attended the Open House on July 29. The 'Open House' turned into a full-on meeting that was facilitated by Glenn Tunnock, the Township planner. The Mayor and all Councillors were in attendance. Howe Islanders raised their concerns with the Draft Amendment and following the meeting, Mr. Tunnock asked HIRA to respond in time for the Public Meeting on Wolfe Island on August 5. HIRA had three (3) board members attend the Wolfe Island meeting along with two (2) members and again, Howe Islanders voiced their opinions. It's of interest to note that unfortunately, the turn-out by Wolfe Islanders wasn't strong with only three (3) were in attendance... Linked below is our submission. We await a response from the Township. In the meantime, if you have any comments or questions, please contact terrybotten@hotmail.com or bwhumphrys@gmail.com. Click here to read our response.

OFFICIAL PLAN MESSAGE TO HIRA MEMBERS
Dear HIRA Member, The Official Plan (OP) is a LAND USE PLANNING DOCUMENT designed to give guidance to Council and others on how the municipality should develop over the future and ensure that future planning will meet the specific needs of the community. The Province requires the municipality to review the OP every five years. The Township held the first public meeting on April 16, 2008 on Howe followed by a meeting on Wolfe with an identical format and the same questions. The consultant, retained by the Township, requested residents to outline their thoughts, ideas, concerns, etc. with an understanding that such items of interest would be addressed during the OP review. A draft has been distributed and will be presented at an open house at St. Philomena Parish Hall on July 29. It is anticipated that Council will adopt the OP at the public meeting on Wolfe Island on August 5. The draft is available on the Township's website, HIRA has a few hard copies for distribution and it's on www.howeisland.org. The HIRA board has reviewed the OP and has a number of concerns that they will present at the open house; however, if you have a concern of a specific nature, please contact Brian Humphrys at bwhumphrys@gmail.com. This is your opportunity to express your thoughts on how the island should develop. If you do not make a presentation, either written or oral, you may lose your right to appeal before the OMB. We urge you to attend the July 29 open house from 5:00-8:00pm to support your HIRA board. Terry Botten Chair
